Mixing Bowls: At least two—one for the apple filling and one for the crisp topping.
Peeler: To peel the apples.
Knife and Cutting Board: For slicing and coring the apples.
Measuring Cups and Spoons: To measure ingredients accurately.
Baking Dish: A 9x13-inch dish works well, but you can also use a round or square baking dish.
Pastry Cutter or Fork: To blend the butter into the crisp topping (you can also use your fingers).
Wooden Spoon or Spatula: For mixing the apple filling and topping.
Oven: Preheated to 350°F (175°C) for baking the crisp.
Cooling Rack (optional): To let the crisp cool slightly after baking.
For the Apple Filling:
- 6 Large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 2 Tbsp Lemon juice
- 1/2 Cup Granulated sugar
- 1/4 Cup Brown sugar
- 2 Tsp Ground cinnamon
- 1/4 Tsp Ground nutmeg
- 1/4 Tsp Ground ginger
- 2 Tbsp All-purpose flour
- 1/2 Tsp Vanilla extract
For the Crisp Topping:
- 1 Cup Old-fashioned oats
- 3/4 Cup All-purpose flour
- 1/2 Cup Brown sugar
- 1/2 Tsp Ground cinnamon
- 1/4 Tsp Salt
- 1/2 Cup Unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
- 1/2 Cup Chopped nuts (optional - Pecan or walnuts work well)
1. Preheat and Prepare:Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray 2. Make the Apple Filling:In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with lemon juice, ensuring they are evenly coated to prevent browning.Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, flour, and vanilla extract. Toss until the apples are well coated with the mixture.Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. 3. Prepare the Crisp Topping:In a separate bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir to mix.Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. If using nuts, stir them into the topping mixture. 4. Assemble and Bake:Evenly sprinkle the crisp topping over the apple filling, covering the apples completely.Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling around the edges. 5. Cool and Serve:Allow the Apple Cinnamon Crisp to cool for about 10 minutes before serving. This helps the filling to set slightly and makes for easier serving.Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
